Deep Work
Hi Team,
This week flew by and I think we can all agree that cheeky Time won’t slow down to accommodate our schedule.
It’s worth taking a second (or a milli-second, if you can’t fit a full one in) to slow down, close your eyes, regroup, and refocus. You’re in control and you need to remember that.
No doubt you’ve wondered why you’re so busy but sometimes feel like you’re not getting nearly enough done. Michelle and I usually end our days with the exclamation - there simply aren’t enough hours! (But really.. who decided 24 was the limit?!)
It’s easy to drown in the shallows if your muscles haven’t been trained how to swim.
The chief technical officer of Atlantic Media once ran the numbers, and it turns out the company was paying their employees approximately $1 million dollars a year just to read and respond to email. ‘Shallow' work like this is of course essential to an extent, but it is worth investing your time in deep work as well - and the key is keeping both in moderation.
Challenges demand your full cognitive focus. Don’t be afraid of focus. Yes, it can be unnerving to mentally hit Airplane mode, as ‘fomo’* pulses through our wires these days. However, the best way to become more creative is openness to new experiences. Try new stuff. Get out there. Nietzsche once said, “All truly great thoughts are conceived by walking.”
Attention is delicate and easily fragmented. Too many cracks and it can sink the boat. To create a good balance, we’re currently looking into a handy communication tool so that we can all stay on the same page and keep our engines in sync.
So while it may not be plausible to go email-free in this day and age, it is worth your while to take a walk, gain new experiences, and let the neurons in your brain make more connections and form new synapses. Cultivate the skill of deep work. It’s becoming rare, and increasingly valuable.
And plus, deep work makes you happier.
I’m shipping you off with some Calvin & Hobbes. Smile, enjoy, and have a fantastic weekend everyone!

*fear of missing out!
